Hunt Country Guest Cottage

Renovated Guest Cottage
They say good things come in small packages. We couldn't agree more, particularly when it comes to this guest cottage on a sprawling hunt-country estate in Charlottesville, VA. The cottage, over 100 years old, is original to the property while the main house was added relatively recently. With the opportunity to blend the "then" and the "now", Broocks updated the historic house with modern day amenities and design elements while adhering to the framework of its history.

The Renovated Kitchen

The kitchen packs a punch, utilizing and organizing every square inch available to maximize storage and functionality. Smaller spaces are sometimes more designer-friendly as far as configuring the space, since often times the skeleton of the layout is either already set, or a new one presents itself immediately for making the most of the space.

Panelized Dishwasher
Instead of having an overwhelming amount of stainless steel in the small space, Broocks opted for a panelized dishwasher so it would blend in with the traditional cabinetry.

Sleek Hood
Notice the hood in the first picture? Neither did we, which is exactly the point! This Silhouette Series Hood by Broan is only about an inch thick, and it comes in different finishes so you can match your appliances whether they are stainless, black or white. To turn on the light, just pull it out a smidge. To turn on the fans, pull it all the way out. Functional AND aesthetically pleasing? A rare combination indeed!

Glass Doors
Never underestimate the magic of glass doors in a small space. They are particularly beautiful in showing off your glassware, with down-lighting from the top of the cabinet through the glasses and glass shelving, or ribbon lighting behind the face frame of the cabinet running the full height of the interior.

Lazy Susans are anything but lazy!
Lazy susans in each corner beside the stove make pots, pans, bowls and other prep and storage necessities a snap to access! These double-shelf wood units turn independently glide around to bring the items from the back right to you.

Fridge
The hard-to-reach space above the refrigerator cabinet is made useful when outfitted with wood dividers and shelves. Perfect for platters, trays, cookie sheets and large roasting pans, the deep cabinet can house over-sized items while the dividers keep them right at your fingertips!

Double-Bin Trash Pull-Out
Ah, the double pull-out trash. A classic. No kitchen is complete without this mundane but amazing element. Trash and recycling are out of sight, but nestled next to the sink, they make clean up after raw chicken prep and other germy endeavors as easy as pie!

Before & After: Dark Stained Wood Makes for Vanity Fair

Master Bath & Vanity- Before

Before: Builder-grade stock cabinets (Boo! Hiss! While stock cabinetry has its place, we're huge fans of custom cabinetry!) in this master bathroom that were simply no longer, well, making the grade.

Master Bath & Vanity- After

After: Beautifully stained hardwood Maple cabinetry, custom-made for the space, and custom-designed for the clients and the way they live. While the couple still wanted two sinks, the makeup-seating area in the center was an obsolete area that could be made into practical, and much-needed, storage. The tall vaulted ceilings allowed for bringing additional storage up with the towers at either end, which along with the valance above, also created a nice visual frame of the vanity wall. And with a large window allowing in plenty of natural light, there was an excellent opportunity to warm the space up with a stained wood finish and granite countertops with nice warm tones. Don't be scared to consider a stained wood finish over a white or painted finish, especially if you get a lot of natural light. The furniture-style bases of the cabinetry, with arches at the toekicks, put the finishing touches on the vanity to create that tailored, custom-made look that we so cherish in our custom cabinetry!

Inspired by Copper!

We are completely taken with this gorgeous copper island hood we specified for a client in Charlottesville, VA. From Copper Kitchen Specialists, we chose this beautiful shape and the Medium Finish to complement the copper farmhouse sink and copper bar sink that are also in the space. Though it's a bit tough to tell in this photo from CKS's website, the apron base is mildly hammered while the chimney is smooth, giving this beautiful piece a bit of subdued texture. Photos to come!
